SANJIAN [Sankan, Third Space, Third Clearance, Third Interval]
Localisation:
on the radial side of the second metacarpal bone, in the angle between the shaft and head of metacarpal bone
- in a loose fist in the depression proximal, to the distal head of the metacarpal bone
Category of Points:
- Shu (Stream) point
- Wood point
Functions:
- dispels Wind and Heat
- clears Heat and benefits the throat and teeth
- dispels fullness and treats diarrhoea
Indication:
- swelling and pain in mouth and throat, difficulty swallowing, sore throat, toothache, facial paralysis, trigeminal neuralgia
- runny nose, nosebleed, tinnitus, eye pain, chills and fever
- diarrhoea from Cold or Dampness, borborygmus (intestinal gurgling)
- stiff neck, redness and swelling of the dorsum of the hand, difficulty in flexing and extending the fingers
Remarks:
- in ancient texts LI3 is recommended for toothache in the lower jaw and LI10 for toothaches in the upper jaw. Modern clinical practice mostly recommends LI4 or- preferred by some practitioners- LI2 for toothaches
- also indicated for constipation from stagnant Liver Qi
- for diarrhoea and stomach growling LI3 is used in conjunction with CV8 and CV9
