SHANGLIAN [Joren, Upper Corner, Upper Ridge, Upper Angle]

Localisation:

3 cun distal to LI11 on the LI5 to LI11 connecting line

  • the distance between the wrist (LI5) and the elbow (LI11) is 12 cun

Category of Points:

Functions:

  • harmonises the large intestine
  • activates the meridian and alleviates pain

Indication:

  • Qi stagnation of the Large Intestine, stomach pain, borborygmus, increased and accelerated intestinal transit (hyper-peristalsis)
  • difficult urination, dark urine
  • chest pain, difficulty breathing, headache
  • discomfort and pain in the shoulder, elbow and arm, hemiplegia

Remarks:

  • LI9 is the mirror point of ST37 (lower He -Sea- point of the Large Intestine) on the arm and is used for colon disorders.  In clinical practice it is mostly used with ST37.
